Stray Puppy Found in a Trash Pit Becomes a Movie Star

This rags-to-riches story of a lost pup turned top dog will tug at your heartstrings. Brace yourself for a tail-wagging tale about the remarkable journey of a stray puppy who went from surviving in a trash pit to shining on the big screen.
The Unlikely Discovery
One fateful day in April 2017, a tiny pup, later named Shelby, was found by Animal Control Officer Megan Buhler. The puppy was whimpering in a garbage-filled pit, a sight that would break any animal lover's heart. But this dog's luck would soon change in ways no one could have predicted.
Buhler shared, "There were lots of cars driving by — I mean, it was heavy traffic. She was so scared, and she finally came right up to me, and I was able to put her in my truck," as reported by The Washington Post. This was just the beginning of an extraordinary tale of hope and resilience.
A Star Is Born
After her rescue, Shelby's endearing personality and natural charisma caught the eye of a movie scout looking for a dog to feature in an upcoming film. Her expressive eyes and remarkable presence in front of the camera clinched her fate. One day, Teresa Ann Miller, a freelance trainer searching for the next star for an upcoming dog film, spotted the adoption photo online.
"Honestly, it was a really good picture, and she was flat-out smiling," Miller told The Washington Post. "I mean, it was beautiful."
And just like that, a star was born.
From On-Screen to Heartthrob
Film writer Cathryn Michon said she was struck by "the extraordinary sweetness of her [Shelby's] soul," according to The Washington Post. She commented that she was "was loving, smart, oh-so-eager to please, and we knew instantly we had found our Bella."
The movie was a hit, and so was its four-legged star. Audiences fell in love with the charming canine, whose performance stole hearts and sparked conversations about animal rescue and adoption.
Variety wrote that the film "is at its best when relying on Shelby and her trainers: It's amazing how much of the humor, drama and emotion is carried on her canine shoulders," as reported by The Washington Post. Her story has inspired countless viewers to consider rescuing animals in need, turning her into an unlikely ambassador for strays everywhere.
A Happy Tail
Today, the once-abandoned pup enjoys the spotlight with her loving adoptive mom, dog trainer Debbie Pearl, in Huntington Beach, California. Shelby works as a therapy dog and actor.
"She just has this insight of what she needs to do when she needs to do it," Pearl told The Washington Post. "And not all dogs have that, even dogs that I've used for therapy dogs for a long time."
Her journey from the dump to a life of fame and luxury shows that fairy tales really can come true for lucky, talented dogs like Shelby.
