Sixty years after qualifying as a candidate to become the first African American astronaut, Edward Dwight realized his dream of traveling to space. Dwight, now 91 years old, took a brief but historic journey aboard the New Shepherd rocket, a project of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos' private space company. In the early 1960s, during the Kennedy Administration, NASA expressed interest in sending a black astronaut into space, with Edward Dwight emerging as the top candidate. His qualifications, including an aeronautics degree from Arizona State University, made him a strong contender among the candidates for NASA's Astronaut Group 3.
Despite high hopes and public support, Dwight was controversially not selected for spaceflight. The political and social climate of the time meant that his dream was deferred, and he eventually pursued a successful career as an artist and sculptor. He recalled receiving 1,500 letters a week addressed to "Astronaut Dwight," reflecting the high expectations placed on him.

Mission NS-25 marked the seventh human flight for Blue Origin's New Shepard vehicle, which aims to pave the way for more ambitious projects like heavy rockets and lunar landers. During the flight, the New Shepard rocket and its capsule, which produce zero carbon emissions, performed flawlessly. Passengers experienced weightlessness as the capsule soared beyond the Kármán Line before returning to Earth. This mission adds to Blue Origin's record of flying 31 people aboard New Shepard, continuing to push the boundaries of suborbital space tourism. Dwight now holds the title of the oldest person to enter space, surpassing Star Trek actor William Shatner. Astronaut John Glenn remains the oldest person to orbit the planet at age 77.
