Las Vegas Gym Turns Deadly in Shocking Shooting

The rhythmic thump of bass-heavy workout music and the hum of treadmills were shattered by something unthinkable — gunfire. Inside the Las Vegas Athletic Club on a typical Friday afternoon, a place built for strength and self-improvement became a scene of chaos, fear, and tragic loss.
A Calm Entrance Before the Storm
Around 4 p.m. on May 16, 34-year-old Daniel Ortega walked into the Las Vegas gym he regularly attended. But this time, he wasn't there to lift weights. Armed with a .223 caliber rifle and carrying multiple magazines of ammunition, Ortega strolled through the gym lobby, passing by patrons without immediate confrontation. Some noticed his odd demeanor — one man thought Ortega looked like a police officer. But when questioned about the gun, Ortega told him, "No, it's fake," before quickly amending, "No, it's real, you should get out of here," according to 8 News Now.
Despite the warning, there was little time to react. According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police, Ortega approached the front desk and began pacing. Then, without known provocation, he opened fire.
The Victim and the Aftermath
Edgar Quinonez, a 31-year-old gym employee and Las Vegas local, was working the front desk when he was fatally shot. Authorities later confirmed there was no known connection between Quinonez and Ortega.
Witnesses described the horrifying moments as Ortega continued to fire inside the gym. Some members hid in closets, behind gym equipment, or even on the building's roof to escape the gunman. One caller told dispatchers, "He has a huge, long gun. I don't know what kind of gun it is," while another said simply, "I just ran," according to 8 News Now.
Three additional individuals were injured during the shooting. One was listed in critical condition. The names and conditions of the injured were not released as of the most recent police updates.
Police Intervention and Suspect's Death
The situation may have escalated further if not for Ortega's weapon malfunctioning. Officials believe this mechanical failure prevented the attack from becoming a full-blown mass casualty event. Las Vegas police arrived as Ortega attempted to leave the gym, still armed. Officers shot him outside the building. Ortega was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Assistant Sheriff Jamie Prosser noted that Ortega fired 24 rounds before the malfunction.
An Ongoing Investigation With Few Answers
As of this writing, Ortega's motive remains unclear. Police confirmed he was a member of the gym and often worked out at the location, but no personal or professional connection to the victims has been discovered. More than 30 911 calls were made in the minutes following the attack, each one painting a grim picture of the panic and confusion that swept through the facility.
According to law enforcement, Ortega appeared to intentionally avoid other patrons during his approach. Some gym-goers said he moved them aside instead of shooting. According to 8 News Now, one 911 caller reported that the gunman told them to "move" and didn't shoot, further suggesting that Quinonez may have been a specific target, though this has not been officially established.
A City Reflects
Las Vegas is no stranger to tragedy, and this shooting has once again prompted the city to examine safety and the hidden mental health struggles that may precede such violence. The gym, typically a sanctuary for self-improvement and health, became an unlikely stage for loss and bravery. The fast action of first responders, the potential lifesaving malfunction of a firearm, and even Ortega's own ominous warnings spared lives — but not without leaving deep emotional scars.
