Key Swing States for 2024-1

Swing states, also known as battleground states, are crucial in determining the outcome of presidential elections. These states can "swing" to either Democratic or Republican candidates, prompting political parties to invest significant time and resources to win them. Swing states are identified by their small vote margins and the fact that different political parties win them over time. Since 1992, 30 states have switched party allegiance at least once, and 26 states have been won by less than three points in any presidential election during that period. Here's a look at the current swing states for the 2024 election.

1. Arizona

Key Swing States for 2024-2

Electoral Votes: 11

Arizona has emerged as a key battleground state. While Donald Trump won Arizona in 2016, Joe Biden flipped it in 2020. The state's changing demographics and contentious issues like immigration make it a hotly contested state in 2024.

2. Florida

Key Swing States for 2024-3

Electoral Votes: 29

Florida remains a perennial swing state with significant electoral votes. Trump won Florida in both 2016 and 2020, but its close races make it a focus for campaign efforts. The state's diverse electorate and huge number of electoral votes make it crucial for both parties.

3. Georgia

Key Swing States for 2024-4

Electoral Votes: 16

Georgia's status as a swing state solidified after Biden's narrow victory in 2020, the first Democratic win since 1992. High Black voter turnout was key in 2020, and the state continues to be a battleground with significant electoral importance.

4. Michigan

Key Swing States for 2024-5

Electoral Votes: 15

Michigan is another "blue wall" state that Biden won in 2020 after Trump's surprise victory in 2016. The state's working-class voters and economic issues make it a critical battleground.

5. Minnesota

Key Swing States for 2024-6

Electoral Votes: 10

Minnesota has traditionally leaned Democratic, but its inclusion in the swing state category reflects the narrowing margins in recent elections. In 2024, it remains a state to watch.

6. Nevada

Key Swing States for 2024-7

Electoral Votes: 6

Despite its smaller number of electoral votes, Nevada is essential. Biden's win in 2020 marked the fourth consecutive Democratic victory, but always by narrow margins, keeping it competitive for both parties.

7. North Carolina

Key Swing States for 2024-8

Electoral Votes: 16

North Carolina leans Republican but remains a swing state due to its close races. Trump won by just 1.3 points in 2020, and Democrats hope it will be a key state in their 2024 strategy.

8. Pennsylvania

Key Swing States for 2024-9

Electoral Votes: 19

Pennsylvania is another critical "blue wall" state that Biden won in 2020 after Trump's win in 2016. Its substantial electoral votes and close races make it a key target for both parties.

9. Wisconsin

Key Swing States for 2024-10

Electoral Votes: 10

Wisconsin flipped back to the Democrats in 2020 after Trump's narrow win in 2016. It remains a pivotal battleground state with significant electoral influence.

Important Issues

For the 2024 election, the economy is the top issue for voters in every swing state. Abortion and immigration are the second and third most important issues, respectively. Between 60% and 75% of voters say the cost of living is "extremely" important, making it the most critical issue. The cost of healthcare is the second most cited "extremely" important issue (52%-61%), except in Arizona, where election integrity ranks second (53%). Around half of the voters in each state also consider election integrity, taxation, abortion, policing/crime, and illegal immigration as "extremely" important in determining their vote.

Swing states are dynamic and can change from election to election based on demographic shifts and political trends. These states will likely continue to be focal points for campaigns, as their outcomes often decide the presidency.
