While many were finding new hobbies during the pandemic, Bridgit Mendler was building scientific prototypes, marking a significant pivot from her acting days.

"While everybody else was making their sourdough starters [during the Covid-19 pandemic], we were building antennas out of random crap we could find at Home Depot ... and receiving data from [National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration] satellites," Mendler told CNBC while announcing her startup.

A Serendipitous Origin Story

Mendler's journey from the entertainment industry to becoming the CEO of a space startup began with a simple mistake on a college application, inadvertently setting her on a path to innovation.

While completing her application to the University of Southern California, Mendler unintentionally selected anthropology as her major, which she later embraced. This eventually led her to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for further studies.

From Anthropology to Aerospace

Mendler's academic journey took her from an accidental anthropology major to earning a technology-focused Ph.D. and a juris doctor degree. Her unique background, combining humanities with technology, positioned her to co-found Northwood Space, a company aimed at revolutionizing communication with space satellites. Mendler credits her parents, both engineers, for her science-oriented upbringing, which played a crucial role in her career pivot.

Building Northwood Space

With her husband and a close colleague, Mendler established Northwood Space to create a more efficient infrastructure for satellite backhaul. The startup has attracted significant attention, securing $6.3 million in initial funding from notable venture capital firms. Mendler's transition from actress to CEO underscores her multifaceted career and the unexpected ways our lives can unfold.

"At Northwood, we're rethinking infrastructure for satellite backhaul from the ground up. We have our sights on building a data highway between earth and space," Mendler wrote in a post on LinkedIn. "We have a lot of work ahead of us but that's the fun part."
