6 Worst Things to Wear on a Plane and Why-1

Did you know travel experts consider some clothing items no-no's when traveling by air? And it may not be for the reasons you think.

Seasoned travelers and newbies alike: Buckle up while we give tips on what not to wear on an airplane.

1. High Heels, Open-Toed Shoes, and Uncomfortable Shoes

Yes, this includes flip-flops and sandals. Instead, choose flat, comfortable, closed-toe shoes. Ideally, a no-tie sneaker that slips on and off easily would be an excellent choice.

Why?

  • Shoes you can easily take on and off work best for speeding through airport security screening.
  • Keep in mind that your feet may swell while in the air, so the more comfortable the shoe, the better.
  • In the event of an emergency evacuation, you want to be wearing shoes that help you exit the airplane as quickly as possible and minimize your risk of foot injuries.

2. Synthetic-Fiber Clothing

Yes pantyhose, we're looking at you. Travel experts recommend avoiding any clothing item made with synthetic fibers – such as nylon, rayon and polyester – on an airplane. Instead, choose clothing made with natural fibers, like cotton.

Why?

  • In the event of a fire, synthetic fiber clothing can actually cause severe burns by melting onto your skin. Yikes.

3. Tight or Restrictive Clothing

Sure, go ahead and pack those skinny jeans in your carry-on bag, but think twice before wearing them on the airplane. Instead, choose a stretchy, loose travel outfit that allows you to move freely during the entire flight.

Why?

  • The more comfortable you feel while traveling, the better.
  • Sitting for extended periods of time on a plane while wearing tight clothing can restrict blood flow and cause swelling. Restricted blood flow can even cause deep vein thrombosis (blood clots in the legs), a serious condition.

4. Complicated Clothing

Experts also recommend avoiding particularly intricate attire that is difficult to remove. We're talking about outfits with lots of snaps, buttons, zippers, or layers. When you're navigating a tiny airplane lavatory, you'll thank us for this one.

Why?

  • Whether you must remove clothing for a TSA pat down or you simply need to visit the restroom, this tip will make everything easier.
  • In an emergency, medical personnel may need to remove your clothing as quickly as possible. The simpler you dress, the more quickly they potentially can save your life.

5. Bulky Jewelry and Accessories

If you are lucky enough to own a Heart-of-the-Ocean-type necklace, congratulations. But take a note from the movie "Titanic" and leave it locked in a safe at home. Even if your accessories fall more into the knock-off category, travel experts agree that heavy jewelry with complicated clasps, loads of accessories, and even large belt buckles should not be worn. If you must wear jewelry on a flight, choose simple, easy-to-remove pieces.

Why?

  • The more metal you wear while traveling, the more likely TSA will stop you for an impromptu airport screening.
  • Traveling with expensive jewelry in plain sight can put you at risk as a theft target, especially in certain countries.

6. Provocative Clothing

Avoid clothing that could be perceived as revealing or offensive while traveling. Deep-plunging necklines, short shorts, crop tops, divisive t-shirts and even sleepwear could fall into this category. Experts recommend dressing respectfully as a best practice during your travels.

Why?

  • Certain cultures and even airlines may consider provocative items disrespectful. Some countries even have laws about modesty.
  • With in-flight altercations in the news, respectful dress minimizes your chance of conflict with another passenger.
  • Skimpier items of clothing provide less protection for your skin in an emergency.

So, the next time you head out on a trip, remember these tips to ensure a smoother, safer, and more comfortable journey. Bon voyage!
